Rio Grande Valley macros (ID needed for two images)
Posted By: Marc Langille, 06-27-2009, 11:35 AM

So what do you photograph late at night since it's too damn hot during the day and in the midst of 7 months of no measurable precipitation?

Turn on the lights outside the cabin and wait...

Owlet Moth:

Moth:

Crop of head detail:

Beetle:

EXIF

I checked Bug Guide, but no definitive answer - there are several possibilities... If anyone can identify the second moth and the beetle species, much appreciated!

Gear setup: tripod, cabled remote, extension cable to AF540 + Sto-fen diffuser. I hope you enjoy this image series!

Regards,
Marc

Hi Jim, thanks for the kind words - it never ceases to amaze me either! However, really good technique is so important with a long focal length macro, so the image results quickly tells the truth as to whether or not you have steady hands (when hand held) or the subject has moved a tad.

It's not light at 2.4 lbs either, but with the K10D/K20D + grip, it's well balanced and the weight dampens movement (as opposed to a light setup).

Tim, I appreciate the comments and I'm still waiting on an ID for subject #2 and #3... May have to consult my etymologist friend overseas.

Marc

Thank you both for the comments! No FA 100/2.8 - it was sold last year and I've removed it from my profile equipment list.

Photolady: it's the FA* 200/4 macro as mentioned and linked to in my previous post. Thanks again for looking and commenting!

Regards,
Marc

Thanks Niki - I do have some more macros already posted and a real treat in store that I am very pleased with. This is a copy from another post:

I just wrapped up some macros of an unexpected visitor in front of my house. I took several shots then placed mom in a less stressful spot with all of her babies on a wood tree stump and rocks. She felt so at home and stress free that she started to clean herself!! One baby crawled around for a short stint on her body. Needless to say I got some pretty nice shots, definitely the best I've done this year and more importantly, never that many subjects in a shot before... ever...
