Grey Herons (3 pics)
Posted By: tcom, 05-01-2007, 09:28 AM

Here a few Grey Herons I took today.

Normally when I approach a heron, it will fly away before I am in reach with my tele (even a 400mm). But today I was finally lucky.

K100D, Tokina 80-400, 1/500s f/8.0 at 400.0mm iso400

Really nice shots Dom, I have the same problem with herons, and cardinals, and bluejays, and robins, and terns, and swallows, and crows, and sparrows, and..... you get the idea. That's why I take photos of flowers instead, they can't run away.

I see that it has a band above it's left knee joint. He probably has good reason to be leary of humans. Nice detail on the feathers for iso 400.

Very nice shots. Around these parts these are called Great Blue Herons. I have heard them called Greys and several other things.
Well done esp. #2 with the wings spread in preperation of flight. Not that they are not all nice sharp shots.

Nice shots, Tom.
Found a Blue Heron nesting spot here in town, but it is fenced off and even with 170-500 + 1.4 TC still don't have enough reach to get a decent picture.
