Two Infrareds from the Park
Posted By: xs400, 05-01-2007, 11:01 PM

Here are a couple of infrared shots from last weekend. I used a K100D, 18-55mm kit lens, and Hoya R72 IR filter. I just got a copy of Photoshop CS2 that I used for the processing. I used PS Elements before for infrared post processing, the CS2 is much better for IR. What do you think?

I like 'em! I think I like the light-blue cast of the top one the best. BTW I ordered a 72R late last week so it should be here any day. Can't wait to try it out. :-)

Good work, Frank. The condensation trails distract from the beauty of the first image. If it were my picture, I'd clone out those contrails. Easy to do with your new CS2. IR is fun, huh?

How did you find processing easier with CS2, compared to Elements?

Frank has a tute on his site that explains the whole process. Here's the link:

Thanks for the link. Didn't know he had a tutorial on-line. One to bookmark.

That link doesn't describe how I got the color cast in the first shot. The tutorial was for when I was using PS Elements. With PS Elements I could not get that color cast. Just last week I got PS CS2. Now that I have PS CS2 I use the Channel Mixer and sometimes adjust the White Ballance to generate the color cast.

I'll write something up over the next few days to describe how I use the Channel mixer to get the colors.

Thanks for the comment. You are right, the con trails should be removed. I'll try doing that and see how the shot looks. Thanks for the suggestion.

IR is fun, something of a challenge as well. I like the challenge of trying to get a good picture. I have a lot of bad shots you don't get to see.

I am still trying to figure out CS2. It is much more powerfull than Elements, and some of the commands are in different places on the menu or toolbars. I have to get used to CS2 before I can say if CS2 is easier than Elements or not.

Thanks! Yea I'm still playing around with my DIY infrared filter but so far it seems to be working. Just gotta seal off the light coming in from the sides.

Hah! How young are you? How much time do you have? I've been using Photoshop since version 2.5, back in the mid 80's, and still feel that I've only scratched the surface. Adobe has done well to not allow the program to become "bloated" as many complicated programs become with the passing of the years.

Just learned yesterday, and tried it today, a new sharpening procedure using HSI color space. Works well. I'll post an image later explaining the procedure and resultant images using the "traditional" method and the new HSI method.

I just updated the link listed above to make the description on the website a little more clear. The link describes how to make a monochrome IR image using PS Elements. Next I will work on a description for using PS CS2 for making IR images having a color cast.

Excellent shots, Frank! I love the colors in the first one, but I really love the B&W range and contrasts in the second, and the setting is fantastic. Both are very well done.

Isn't shooting in IR cool!?!
