Big Baby Eagles learning to Fly!
Posted By: jack56, 07-07-2009, 05:13 PM

Someone mentioned that there were no birds to photograph... how about these?
(I have First Flight I & II, but those weren't as good as these as I couldn't get the parents in those)

First flight III
You thought those were good? Wait until you see day 3!
Have I got a story for you! This is day 3 in my sequence of the eagle babies learning to leave the nest and fly. Today the Mom was calling the babies out of the nest as they didn't want to leave. This is the sequence that followed. Lot's of action!

C'mon son... you can FLY!

Uh oh... here comes the kid!

Daddy, daddy, look at me flying! (notice Dad trying to avoid the collision!)

"Dang kid, there's a whole tree here and you got to push me off."

Daddy, come back!

Look at me, look at me! I can fly!

First Flight IV

Well, this is the last one.
These pics can't beat the last set, as the parents are no longer going to the nest.

These two shots will give you an idea how far away the nest and landing tree was:

Since the two Eaglets have Flown away from the nest several times, the parents no longer come to the nest. They are hanging out in the woods behind me. This shot was from a long ways away.

I went the past two days and nothing happened. The eaglets just sat near the nest until dark. No parents
Yesterday, one eaglet was gone and the other still near the nest.
Near dark, the eaglet finally flew to the top of one tree,

then to the one they practice on so much,

then to the woods behind me to join the other eaglet and parents.

I think this was a goodbye. I was kinda sad yet so happy I got to see all this.
The Pro's I was shooting with told me they have been using that nest for 22 years, so I'll be back and ready next year with much better know-how and better lenses.

I hope Y'all enjoy this series...
Cheers

Niiice! What kind of lens are you using? I tried using my 18-55mm to capture birds on my backyard, there was a red one then the next day two yellow ones. But everytime I get too close with max zoom to try to get the best shot, they fly away! I need a better telephoto lens, I want 18-250 that way I won't have to swap out from 18-55 to 55-300 everytime.

Thanks for all the nice compliments. I shot most of these with the Tamron 28-300mm. 1 or 2 were with the Nikon P90.
I just bought a Tamron 18-250mm from a member here.
Now I still need to get a zoom in the 100-400mm range for better bird shots as I have to crop too much as it is.

Well, a month after the baby Eaglet's left the nest, I went back last Sunday to see if I could see anything. All I saw was one of the parents sitting in a tree not far from the nest. I manage to get pretty close as the road where I was was above the river gully and tree that he or she was in.

I can't wait until next year when they nest again. I'll be ready from the beginning this time and hopefully with a 500mm lens.
