Six different damselflies in an hour....
Posted By: Heinrich Lohmann, 07-07-2009, 10:24 PM

....that's what I found on the return trip in Northern Ontario. I pulled into a rest area along the highway by a small lake, opened the car door and closed it just as quick. The air was full of mosquitos and many other flying critters but after dowsing myself in insect repellent it was bearable but still got stung quite a bit. Anyway I also found all these damselflies.

Familiar Bluet

A Bluet

Unidentified

Eastern Forktail

Bluet

Eastern Forktail

Ebony Jewelwing (male)

This last one is not sharp but I had never seen one before and only got one shot at him before he departed and would not come back.

All with K20D and DFA 2.8 100 mm macro. Fill flash on most of them.

Comments are always welcome and appreciated

Heinrich, i am glad you took a few stings for the team...these are breathtaking images, every last one of them. Shot #1 however is particularly mesmerizing.
no distress from these damsels, i'd say.
thanks for posting,
Mike

Heinrich, It seems you have developed a reputation in the macroworld. If you set up a tripod and camera, they line up for portraits. Beautiful shots my friend.

Heinrich, I like these shots very much, and even more so since I tried to make some photos of these animals myself (and did not succeed...).

I think he's got them trained or drugged to line up for photos when he comes around. LOL

Nice, really nice shots Heinrich.

I too have tried this, only to have them fly away as soon as they're in focus.

Thank you for the kind words. I don't use a tripod for field macro work, just doesn't work with my style of shooting.

Take care,

BR,
Thank you Rense, it took me almost a full season a few years ago to get my first in focus damselfly but once you figure it out it becomes almost easy.

Take care,

Thank you. Two things: 1, When they fly away most of the time they will come right back to the same spot, so be patient. 2, Use flash fill because for whatever reason, if you can get the first shot off it seems to sort of mesmerize them and they sit there for while but you still have to work fast.

Take care,

Thank you, the stings are not that bad. We take vitamine B 100mg daily and that really helps.

Take care,

Thanks for the tips Heinrich.

I have a friend in NY that shoots butterflies and he told me to use flash to hold them still. So, your suggestion would be in the line of his advice too. I just have to buy a flash.
