The madness sets in...
Posted By: heliphoto, 07-10-2009, 03:32 PM

So as some of you may know, I work in the summer as a helicopter pilot for a firefighting crew in Nevada, USA... Well it's been a slow season and sitting around the the desert heat is starting to get to the guys ... someone had hair clippers...

"if you guys do hawks, I'll shave my eyebrows..."

I admit I went over the top a little on post processing - I think "over the top" works for the subject matter .

GS-3s and 4s? Heck thats a couple of levels below lab rats. Sorry to hear these guys make so little compared to what they do. As for the photos... Awesome! LOL The last one is extra cool!

Yeah - and the agencies wonder why retention is so low. Whenever you see those large fires on the summer news, keep in mind that as far as federal crews go, the highest paid guys who actually end up dirty at the end of the day (ie, get the work done) are usually about the GS-9 level, but the vast majority are -3s and -4s (I've even met some GS-2s ). Consider also that they'll be camping in pop tents for two or three weeks at a time, often trying to sleep in a tent in the sun in 100° F heat in the middle of a fair-grounds while diesel trucks drive around all day (the joys of working night shift)... Ah... living the dream .

Glad you like the shots. I'm happy with the last one.

Thanks for looking and commenting cwhans... while I wouldn't recommend antagonizing them in a bar, you needn't worry about these dudes, they're pretty normal (other than being amazingly fit and having funny haircuts )... Out of that last picture for instance, one of those guys is working on his masters in english lit, one's a father of three, one's an engineering major, etc... (and in general, they won't shave your eyebrows off unless you ask them to ).
