Thank you Mike for the kind words and it's done with tenacity and patience.
Take care,
Originally posted by pingflood Heinrich, I would love to hear more about how you approach small birds like these. Do you have a blind setup, or a feeder nearby, or something along those lines? I have a hell of a time getting close to the little guys...
OK, I'll try and explain how I do it. In our backyard we have two trees, a
Mayday Tree and a White Ash and from branch tip to branch-tip there is only about 10 feet of room in between them. Right next to the Mayday I have the feeders and two bird baths are under the White Ash. On the pole that holds the feeder I have two perches, one above and one below the feeders. The birds use both trees to sit in but the White Ash is too dense to do any shooting in it. The Mayday Tree is more open and lends itself to shooting into it. (with good luck) I have arranged the perches in such a way that most of the time I do have one of the trees as background.
I set the tripod up on a table, about 15' and no more than 20 feet from the perches and in such a way that I can swing the camera around to face the bird bath. Now all you need is patience and I do mean patience. You have to get the birds used to you not only by sitting there but by being around the yard and more or less become part of the surroundings.
Wear muted closing, don't go out there in a white shirt, try and blend in.
It's funny but they do learn to trust you. In early Spring when I went to fill the feeder every bird left the yard. Now they just fly back into the trees and some go just to the ground and keep on feeding.
Good luck and I hope that this is of some help to you.
