Saturday heron, Sunday heron (9 img)
Posted By: flippedgazelle, 07-13-2009, 09:48 PM

Sunday, in particular, was a disappointing day of photography for me (not that I was out very long) until I encountered this handsome green heron at Lake Musconetcong, NJ. I had seen him one other time, but too far away to get off a decent shot

The GBH was at Saxton Falls, NJ. I had photographed him once before, but this is the closest I've ever gotten.

All photos taken with the Tamron 70-300, and either no cropping or very little cropping except for the last shot of the greenie, which was cropped about 40%.

all nice shots. the white suds provide contrast for the blue herons color which normally are lost against the water. The green crested heron on the lillies looks great in that very warm light. If you have not watched the greenie much, keep at till you get a shot of him with his crest popped up like a mohawk. Looks like a whole different bird.

Thank you for the kind comments! I was quite fortunate to find the green heron in the late adternoon sun.

I haven't had the chance to watch the greenie much - he's pretty flighty. Now you have me eager to view his "mohawk crest"!

Thank you all for the very kind words!

dcmsox2004, I think the lovely backgrounds make the shots.

vievetrick, there were about 6 humans watching the GBH. The time from my 1st shot to the last was 18 minutes - that's a long time with a wildlife subject! Several times would raise his head and look straight at me, then resume his fishing. Unfortunately, when the GBH left, he flew directly away from me, so I had no chance to get a BIF shot.
