Green Herons
Posted By: r scott webb, 07-16-2009, 12:52 PM

Here are some shots of green herons from the C&O (Chesapeake and Ohio) Canal in Cumberland MD. All shots handheld with K10D and Tamron 75-300 except for one with Kimunor 500mm T-mount (also handheld, which really sux btw).

Green Heron sharing face-time with some Painted Turtles.

Green Heron, shot with Kimunor 500mm, handheld.

Walked right by this little one the first time. If it hadn't moved on the way back I'd have missed it completely.

A real DOH! moment!

After I posted these shots something in the first one caught my eye. I took these photos yesterday but didn't notice until today. Did anyone happen to spot the monster snapping turtle hidden in the green slime? Hint: Mr. Butorides virescens (or Green Heron) bill is pointing almost directly at it's head! I didn't even see the dumb thing when I did my processing...talk about missing the forest for the trees.

DOH!

Nice combo of greenies, turtles, slime, rotten wood, kind of looks like a setting that Rambo has to crawl through to save the world. And yes, a fine looking snapper! Glad I'm not Rambo.

Thanks for looking...

vmax, after looking at the FedEx jet I suspect you may be exaggerating a bit about flushing your stuff

Lee, funny you should mention Rambo...that's exactly what I thought the first time I walked that canal. After seeing that snapping turtle I wouldn't stick my big toe in that water! Although snapper soup would be pretty tasty!

Thank you both for looking and for taking the time to reply.

Very interesting shot! I only saw (in additions to the heron) those little turtles, the big one is a mystery!

Follow the heron

If you follow the heron's line of sight to the left, the first vertical twig intersects the snapper just about where it's neck meets it's shell. It is completely covered in the green slime and looks like a disc and a knobby limb sticking out of the water.

Found this thread looking for info on your Kimunor but here's a pic from my first day out with new (to me) k10d and quataray 70-300.

The sun was below the trees so it's nearly wide open. Monopod mounted at 300mm.
