365 Self-Portraits: Week Three
Posted By: K McCall, 07-23-2009, 10:37 AM

I spent almost all of the past week with my boyfriend's family (sans boyfriend, oddly enough), and in the interest of seeming like a "normal person" I didn't really spend much time on my self-portrait project (I distinctly remember one day taking a total of about 20 seconds). However, I did get to see a bit of northern Germany, and I got to go to the Frankfurt Zoo, so it was quite exciting all the same

A little background: I chose to do a self-portrait project about 2 months after getting my first DSLR, a K100D, to help me improve my camera and post-processing skills and to force myself to use my camera every day. I'm sure there are subconscious reasons in there as well, but basically at the time I lived alone and had no children or pets or anything else to practice on, and a couple of my friends had joined a group on flickr that was just for this project. So for two years now, I've taken a self-portrait every day. I just finished year two on June 30th. I decided to do a third year, but this time I'm trying to do a "matching" shot for each day. Ideally either the subject matter or the mood or the processing or the place or the contours of the composition match the self-portrait. I'm also playing around with my lenses to try to either take two radically different photos with the same lens or to take similar photos with vastly different lenses.

So, without further ado, here's week three. I used the K200D, the D-FA 100/2.8, the FA 31/1.8, and the DA 12-24/4.

Day 15: Arcs

Day 16: Flights of Fancy

Day 17: Diagonals

Day 18: On the Road

Day 19: Side-Lighting

Day 20: They Swim Into Our Lives, and Then They Just Swim Away

Day 21: Iris.

A few things, all of which I am sure have been said before. First, your processing is always so good; dramatic, but not overdone. Second, you are quite a chameleon; you can look so different from one shot to the next. Great shots. I especially like Day 16, Flights of Fancy.

Where did you learn your PP skills? Are you self taught or did you learn from an online guide?
