Lightening Storm - First attempts
Posted By: Javaslinger, 07-26-2009, 09:51 PM

Disclaimer... Did this on a whim... I can see some errors such as noise due to high ISO perhaps.... Shot these on a porch so please forgive the banister and the powerlines...

I really didn't know what I was doing, just did a long exposure (4-10 seconds) and hoped lightning flashed... Used a tripod. Some limited post processing in Lightroom2

Please send your comments and criticism....

Thanks!!

I'm liking all of these. The last photo is a really nice strike but I like how you caught the cloud lighting up in all of them.

My only critique would be if the chance comes along again, try and avoid the wall/roof line.

Nice ones there.

#2's spooky and cool at the same time.
Hard to know what you'll get with lightning, eh?

Thank you for the flattering comments!

One thing I'm frustrated about is that these photo's all look strikingly different on the 3 montitors I've looked at them on. I originally worked with them on my home PC. The morning I've looked at them on two different work computers and they all are very different in terms of contrast and brightness (I think)...

It seem an impossible challenge to process photo's optimally when everyone's computer can be quite different!

Thanks,

Ken

They're all nice, but the last one is a winner. As long as you learn something everytime you use your camera it's been a successful shoot.

Nice job on them all. The last one is where you got the big one.

#4 does the trick for me. It looks pretty sharp for a night photo!

Wow! These are all breathtaking! I can't believe you came away with that many successful shots! Lightning has to be the most difficult subject. You executed quite well.

Ah, now you guys are starting to make me blush...

But seriously I can't take all the credit... Mother nature did give me a pretty dramatic cloud formation which made even the less successful shots still look quite dramatic.

Can't wait to do it again!

cool shots. I think I most like number two as it really is a good look at a thunderhead. #4 is the classic lightning shot and looks great as well. Great colors.
