Alinghi 5, catamaran for next America's Cup
Posted By: tcom, 07-27-2009, 04:16 AM

Two weeks ago, the catamaran of Alinghi was put in the water of Lake Geneva. They do make the first testings here. In the next two or three weeks, the catamaran will be transported to the sea.

But for the moment, the Alinghi 5, the catamaran for the next America's Cup is here on the lake with the crew.

I tried to take a few photos during the weekend. I would have liked that they put on the sail while still in reach for my tele, but the sail is so large, they prefer to be well off the coast before putting it on, so out of reach for the DA*300...

Here are the shots:

K-7, DA70

K-7, DA*300

I took the following photos with the K-7 and the Sigma 10-20/4-5.6. For some reasons, I do find this lens does not perform as well as on the K10D. I guess the 14MP sensor outresolves the Sigma 10-20/4-5.6. Maybe the new Sigma 10-20/3.5 is better in this regards

Those things are so danged impressive. Nice photos. #2 really shows her size.

Yeah, too bad they didn't raise the sail.

Great shots of a big, mean machine, Dominique. Obviously, of interest to me.

OK... one question... Will they actually keel this thing over like you'd do with a smaller Cat to get one hull out of the water?

Yes, they do, and they even did it on the first day.

Looks like a very high tech piece of equipment - almost doesn't look like a boat (at least not like the boats used back when Australia won the cup! )

Your photos help convey the sheer size of the boat - well done!

I would like to take at speed, and possibly with one hull out of the water, but I would need a fast boat to be able to follow. I will at least try to get a shot with the sails.

It is a 90ft catamaran, with a height of 165ft.

A photo at speed with hull out of the water can be found under Alinghi : Defender of the 33rd America's Cup - Alinghi 5 sails for the first time on Lake Geneva

That's a beautiful thing. I can't wait to see some video.

Meanwhile, someone I know has been sailing this thing

Yep, that is one beast of thing...

The old six degrees of separation thing happening here, I met the girlfriend of one of the two crew of the Macquarie Innovation, on a train which just happened to be going past the same Lake Geneva seen above! (albeit 20 years ago.)

Cool Cat

I'm surprised at your comment about the 10-20. Those images actually seem to outperform the *300 IMHO.

Great series, should be an interesting AC.
