the view from my doorstep
Posted By: little laker, 08-01-2009, 10:41 PM

This photo was literally taken from my doorstep.

there's a nasty fire burning across the valley.
Taken at 70mm, no cropping.

Honestly my place is safe. The airport is between the fire and my house, and they'd never let it burn.

However I do have a few good friends it could easily effect.

There's a good chance I'll have more pic's tomorrow, after work.

Scary looking Stu. California has it bad every summer. Fire season is starting late this summer because it's been cool and we've had lots of fog. Once it starts though, I expect it to go on into December.
It's very sad for those affected, I feel for you guys up there.

WOW

Really sorry to see this kind of thing. Fascinating shot though. I really hope it was created by lightning and not by some dumb human. Not like it would make any difference to those that suffer a loss. Be safe and all the best to your friends.

It's been 37/40 (104/110) here at home when normally it's been in the 20s... It's also been hot for a few months and there is no end in site. I haven't heard the news today....but yesterday there were 150+ new fires. They are flying in firefighters from all over the place. Very scary times for us up here in BC.

We watch you guys burning up every year Gary, I believe that some of our forest fire fighters head south and help you out whenever possible as well.
I actually believe that forest fires are Mother Nature's way of cleansing the forest So if it wasn't for peoples houses being destroyed I'd almost like to see them burn.... unless they were caused by man, like I believe this one was

Thanks John,
It really started 2 weeks ago, although they almost had it out... then something happened today, to flare it up again.

The day it started there were at least 4 fires started. And all by man

I've heard about your hot temperatures, and know that you guys do have it rough. At least most of us in this area are more or less used to the heat. Plus most houses in the Okanagan have air conditioning, which also filters out most of the smoke.

Good shot, sorry to hear about the fires though. I notice Josh seems to be to busy to post at the moment. He might even be up your way.

As John says, we had enough earlier this year to last us for a lifetime or so.

Gee, Stu - that is scary looking; please be careful.

Are such fires a common seasonal "feature" of your area, or is this an unusual year?
