Fun In The Mud (mud bog imgs)
Posted By: r scott webb, 08-02-2009, 09:26 PM

Went to the Mineral County Fair in Ft. Ashby WV yesterday and watched the mud bog races. The Army National Guard had to show off between the four-wheelers and the street stock classes.

Army Nat. Guard shows off. This beast didn't even strain itself.

This is my favorite shot of the night. My former coworker, Ryan, is driving this particular Jeep.

The view gets repetitive due to being about 30 yards past the finish line (orange traffic cones) and having an annoying line of K-rails blocking all but the end of the run. Every image above is from where the trucks are coming up out of the bog.
Most of the images look tilted but this is due to the k-rails running diagonally through them. Next year I'll be shooting from the other side (pit side). I'd have done that this year but had my fiancee, her mom, our five kids and my future brother-in-law all along for the fun.

Comments/CC welcome.

What a dirty event.
I'm sure you were glad you had some distance between you and the propelled mud.
Cool captures - with all that mud in the scene, it's hard to work out some of the perspectives, but still looked like lots of fun.

Now that is the definition of mud slinging ! Nice series. Hope you had a long lens on to avoid being burried.

I kinda like the 2nd one the most

The green Jeep, green foliage, brown mud all seem to blend - it is a pity about the wall but it works for me (with the red cone) in this shot

Thanks for looking...

and for the replies. I was using my K10D and Tamron 75-300 (mostly at the 300 end of the range) and ISO's from 400-800. Shutter speeds could have been a little slower to help with tire motion but would have lost all mud definition then. And yes, thankfully, I was far enough away to not worry about flying mud.
