County & State fair entries - input welcome
Posted By: scatron, 08-03-2009, 02:26 PM

Just want some input on state fair entries.

For the county fair (had to get those in yesterday) I printed a bunch via Costco and picked from there. We could enter up to three each so all of us - me, wife, 8-yr-old and 5-yr-old - entered the maximum.

I uploaded what I printed here: County & State Fair 2009 - a set on Flickr and labeled the county fair entries with "ENTRY CO" in the title.

Anyway, here's the choices of stuff I took:

Pick 3 to enter:

(click on photo for larger version)

1) Architecture:

2) Commercial and Industrial:

3) Human interest:

4) Journalistic:

5) Portraiture - children:

6) Portraiture - groups:

7) Scenic - excluding hand of man (choice 1):

8) Scenic - excluding hand of man (choice 2):

9) Scenic - including hand of man:

10) Sports:

11) Wildlife in the wild (crop #1):

12) Wildlife in the wild (crop #2):

13) Wildlife in captivity:

For the county fair, I entered #2, 5 & 11.

Scott, I only see this series now, via 'the other' thread . I like your series, and there are many great photos here. I would enter 6, 9, and 13. That last one has an interresting perspective!

All of those are very worthwhile entries. Good work!

How is the judging done at your fair? How many entries do they have?

Our county fair has a huge photography section. I entered several photos last year and was surprised to find out that there were about 5,000 other entries. While there were awards for best in class, peoples choice, Grand Sweepstakes, etc., most of the entries were judged on their own merits using the "Danish" system. Mine did fairly well with three "First Premium" and two "Second Premium". I was pleased overall.

These are good images, overall. But the standout for me is the two girls with city lights as bokeh in the background.

We have maybe 500 entries. And it's not explained anywhere how the judging is done, but it's not the "Danish" system. There's only one blue ribbon given out in each category, one red ribbon, and so on.

Thanks for the comments. I may try 1, 5 & 13 in the state fair. With my wife competing in the same level as myself (Amateur) we made some decisions so that we weren't competing in the same categories - a main reason I entered #2.

Fair started yesterday - we're going Saturday to see how we did.
