Posted By: tcom, 08-05-2009, 10:35 AM

The Alinghi 5 catamaran for the 33rd America's Cup was transported from the fabric to Lake Geneva with a russian Mi-26 helicopter. This helicopter is staying at the moment in Lausanne to transport the Alinghi catamaran somewhen in the following days from Lake Geneva over the Alps to the Mediterranean Sea.

This morning, I tried to take a few photos of these huge helicopter:

Yes, Gooshin, besides the size of this monster, I was also surprised that the was really nothing and noone to avoid to go even closer. I mean, I could really have touched it, but that would be way too close to take a photo.

Wow, that gives new meaning to the saying: "Helicopters do not fly, they beat the air into submission."

Another series of the Mi-26

I returned this morning to take again a few photos of this monster:

K-7, Sigma 10-20/4-5.6, 10mm, f/8, 1/60s, 100iso

K-7, Sigma 10-20/4-5.6, 11mm, f/8, 1/100s, 100iso

K-7, FA31, f/8, 1/40s, 100iso

K-7, Sigma 10-20/4-5.6, 10mm, f/8, 1/125s, 100iso

Fortunately, three guys arrived to have a closer look as well, so I took a photo to give a scale:
K-7, FA31, f/8, 1/125s, 100iso

Ive been in and around helicopters all my life. ive ridden in all sorts of helicopters (I even got a ride in a V-22) and I have NEVER seen rotor blades so large. the size of those blades compared to the main body.... man. those are some big mother suckers right there. I wouldn't even want to imagine the cost of replacing even one blade. man the turbulence those things could create. id like to see that thing in person. thanks for sharing these photos! very impressive bird.

Thanks for the comments.

séamuis: yes, the turbulence must be huge. The Mi-26 had to transport the Alinghi catamaran from the factory to the Lake. In the days before the transport, specialists were at work in the area of the factory, and they checked that every tiles on the roofs is perfectly in place, and they solidly covered the weaker roofs.

adriano: yes, done, I add all shots, but in 500px clickable version to the full size version.

I've worked with these up close on military operations. If you think they're impressive on the ground, you should see them with a full size shipping container under slung!

Very nice photos of an impressive machine. You caught great lighting on a lot of these pics... Get any of the boat being airlifted?

Well, I saw it on quite a distance, way too far for a photo when it was bringing the boat to the Lake, and it really looked impressive.

Jim: unfortunately my working hours do not allow to take that scene when the Mi-26 does airlift the Alinghi boat this morning to bring it to the sea.
