A selection of Waterfalls in the Smokys and Blue Ridge Mountains
Posted By: MRRiley, 08-09-2009, 07:32 AM

Some waterfalls from our drive thru the Smokys and Blue Ridge Mountains last week. All shot with the K20D and either the DA 16-45mm or the Tamron 28-75mm. A polarizer and NDx8 filters were used to enable increased exposure times.

Bald River Falls 1 - 4sec, f22, 23mm

Bald River Falls 2 - TN - 10sec, f29, 33mm (still working on colorbalancing this one with the previous one - light changed drastically between shots)

Tellico River Cascade 1 - TN - 13sec, f22, 20mm

Tellico River Cascade 2 - TN - 13sec, f22, 20mm

Verdant Cascade - TN - 13sec, f22, 18mm

Fallingwater Cascade - VA - 4sec, f13, 28mm

Crabtree Falls 1 - VA - 4sec, f32, 75mm

Crabtree Falls 2 - VA - 2sec, f20, 63mm

Crabtree Falls 3 - VA - 8sec, f13, 16mm

Crabtree Falls 4 - VA - 8sec, f13, 16mm

Crabtree Falls 5 - VA - 8sec, f10, 45mm

Hope you enjoyed...

Mike

Great set! #3, #5 and #8 are my favourites. Looks like the Smokeys is a nice place to visit. Would you reckon a day or two there would be enough?

Thomas
Thanks Thomas. 2 days would work but 3 would be better. There's lots to see and though the distances aren't great as the crow flies, the roads were all laid out with snakes in mind. Miles and miles of scenery around every corner.

Depends, do you mind hiking? most of the good falls in the park involve roughly 4 mile roundtrip hikes at least. I'd chalk up five days to it.

I spent 3 years at the University of Tennessee there in Knoxville, and I left in December after graduation, and I don't think I ever got near seeing everything I wanted to.

Incredible pictures, makes me want to go back.

Thanks for the info! I don't mind hiking at all, quite like it in fact, it's more a case of trying to put together a two to three week trip through parts of the East/Southeast and where to spend the time. We spent three weeks driving through California, Arizona and Nevada last year and while it was great to get a taste of many places, we didn't get the time we wanted in the best of those, eg only one day in Yosemite and Sedona respectively.

Thanks JQ. Yeah, many of the best falls are off the beaten path but many are right along the road (particularly The Little River betwen Gatlinburg and Cades Cove). More days are always better than less...

Thomas,

If you are going to spend 2-3 weeks in the American Southeast you can see a lot. The Smokys and southern part of the Blue Ridge can easily eat up a week easy, but dont forget the coasts and things like swampland in the Carolinas and Georgia. Florida has some special sights too... If you get serious about a trip you should ask for suggestions from locals here on the forum.

Holy cow Mike these are gorgeous. The first one I had to look at long and hard because at first I didn't think it was even real. It looks surreal. Awesome work.

Thanks Peter! I was pretty pleased myself. Glad to hear you liked the Crabtree ones. They were by far the most work... a 4 mile roundtrip hike with 1000' elevation gain and then loss. My legs were rubber by the time I got back to the car. Oh and the filters are all Hoya HMC's. I've found they perform every bit as good as the Hoya Pro1D's at half the price.

Thanks Gary! The shapes and everything worked well together in those two for sure. Glad you liked em.

Thanks Mel! For whatever reason the moss on the rocks really popped in that shot. Something about the light just brought it out. Glad you liked it

Hey Mike, Other than the filters, what tools did you use? I was in the NC Blue Ridge Mountains a couple weekends ago and didn't get any shots with the feeling that yours have.

I assume you used a tripod, what else?
