Mike
sooooooooo, where are all of our entomologists???
Thank you Mike, seems that you are right, Carpenter Ant, winged Queen.
Take care,
Originally posted by Rense I agree with Mike, it looks like an ant. Nice shots Heinrich!
Hi Rense and thank you.
Take care,
Originally posted by Sailor I don't know one bug from another, but these do look like flying objects (they got wings anyway). Heinreich, these are remarkably sharp and clear; very impressive.

Thanks for the kind words Jer, it is appreciated.

Originally posted by paulyrichard Heinrich, the last one of the three is an awesome image. Did you HDR it slightly?
Thank you for the kind words and no did not HDR the last image, just regular processing. Sometimes one gets lucky, the ant was running around on a white plastic table top that was standing on edge. The last last image is just before it got airborne and disappeared.
Take care,
Originally posted by Marc Langille Based on the head shape, all legs attached to the thorax, it appears to be a queen ant. This is common to see many of them take flight during certain combinations of heat and humidity to reduce predation by birds and maximize their opportunity to mate with a male and start a colony.
I could be very wrong on this... just saying...
I especially like #1 for it's clarity, and #3 for it's motion blur.

Marc
Hi Mark and thanks for the kind reply. Got a hold of "Kaufman, Field guide to insects of North America" according to it it is a "Carpenter ant, winged queen"
Take care,
