My First Stacked Star Trail Photograph
Posted By: Christopher M.W.T, 08-18-2009, 07:31 AM

I learnt to do this tonight using this tutorial

Lets Go Streaking, a Guide to Star Trails : Liquid in Plastic – Photography and Words by Dan Newton

Tools used.

My K7

No tripod (I just sat the camera on the ledge)

16 shots in raw plus one dark frame (turned off slow frame NR, then turned it back off tor the dark frame)

ISO 500
f6.3 (Pentax DA16-45)
30" Shutter
Cable Release (I found interval timer inbuilt didn't work properly for some strange reason)

Photoshop CS4
Lightroom (to process the raws)
Star Trails (this app really suprised me, its amazing)
Vertus fluid mask

Believe it or not I used absolutely no noise reduction software.

Version 1.2 -

Same photo but with extra post-processing.

In a nutshell I made a HDR image from the original with 6 x 0.5EV steps. Then using startrails I stacked the HDR and the NON HDR version.

Nah can't smell it up there, the exhaust fans blow it high into the hair.

How'd you know? lol
I recognised the church, then realised I was looking at the auction rooms in the foreground. From there it was simple!

Shoot me a pm if you want to catch up for a coffee, I'd like to have a look at your processing methods.

Best location in Geelong lived here for nearly 9 years.

Also interestingly enough I sent the 2nd (HDR'ised) photo to the Geelong Advertiser (local newspaper here) just got off the phone with one of their reporters, she wants to do a story on it, most likely be in Saturdays addy.

I made sure I told them I was using a Pentax

I just saw that.

I'm shocked they made it Page 3 and that it was more newsworthy than the wind damage from yesterday hahahha

Yeah, saw the article, not bad placement, and Pentax got the mention. (do you get a free * lens from CRK for that?)

The wind damage was more newsworthy than the Addy realised. Sadly there was a fatality on the banks of the Barwon. A limb blew down and killed a person.

I'm going to scan it and hit up the rep at CR kennedy for some freebies lol.

Since I work for a company that sells their products I think I am deserving hahaha.

Funny I worked at Retravision in Moorabool St yesterday a few people recognised me lol.

Terrible what happened down at Barwon River, wasn't that yesterday though?
