The current Winchelsea was planned after 1250 when the original town was being taken over by the sea. The church would have been built early on and was the size of a modest cathedral.
The (new) winchelsea is laid out on a flat hilltop in a neat grid with wide streets, in contrast to nearby Rye wich is a warren of lanes and alleys.
