Painted Desert
Posted By: Ole, 08-22-2009, 05:09 PM

I have always been fascinated by the colors of the so-called Painted Desert in Arizona. I visited two parts of the Painted Desert a couple of weeks ago, the Wupatki National Monument and the area around the Meteor Crater.

Pentax K10D with DA* 60-250 f/4.

I have gathered more images including a panorama of the Meteor Crater in this gallery.

Hi Ole,
It is a beautiful place. The changeing colours never cease to amaze (me, anyway).

The crater is an awesome sight when you crest its rim for the first time. Well photographed and thanks for sharing.

Thanks for posting these. It's been, literally, decades since I was there - for some reason, the place exudes mystery and these shots capture that.

Thanks for the kind words. A part of the challenge is to make a decent image despite the lack of foreground subjects. Only the area with the ruins provide some foreground material. On the other hand, no foreground - that's how the eye sees it when you drive through - just these vast areas of multicolored surface.

I think vastness is a very difficult thing to capture. You either have to get all of it or details. The middle road is a tough one. These are very nice images. I haven't shot the desert since the film days. I think a trip to the southwest needs to be placed on the agenda somewhere. Thanks for posting. These are really nice.

Love them both especially number one.

Makes me long for Northern Az, I grew up in the painted desert (Holbrook) beautiful and stark country.
