M42 Week '09: Yashinon/Tomioka 60mm f/2.8 Macro
Posted By: deadwolfbones, 08-28-2009, 08:27 AM

Decided this week to shoot using only my oft-neglected M42 lenses on my K20D. Involved in the project are:
  • SMC Takumar 55mm f/1.8
  • Yashinon/Tomioka 60mm f/2.8 Macro
  • Jupiter-9 85mm f/2
  • Vivitar 135mm f/2.8

First up we have the Yashinon 60mm. Frankly, I'm in love with this lens, but it does have its quirks. Most glaringly, it's horrible about flare. Like... really horrible. And the filter ring on mine is dented, so I can't use a CPL or anything. Oh well. Just crank up those black levels in Lightroom!

The lens has an odd design that allows macros from both a reasonable distance and extremely close. It's also a preset lens, which I'm thankfully already used to from my J-9. Anyway, it's ridiculously sharp for both macros and longer shots, and once you amp up the contrast and black levels it has great colors. Here are some examples:

One more, with a crop. Really like the sort of abstract watercolor effect in this:

Thanks, Simon.

Sometimes it's good to take a break from (some of) the conveniences of modern photography, I find.

Well done.

These are cool-cool-cool

I just put my m42 ring on my K20D and have been experimenting. Love the Takumar 55mm. Still this Tomioka 60 seems ideal.

Questions: How do you find MF-ing? I got a splitscreen and it helps. Still hard in the dark but Huge difference.

and What do you mean "a preset lens" ?

Preset lens are pretty cool ... you can set a max. stopped down aperture ... and then open it up for metering .... there's liek 2 aperture rings on the lens (well the one I have has) .... the good thing about some of these is that the aperture ring is fluid without the stops on it ... so you literally can get any aperture setting inbetween stops.

Tkaes a little to get your head around it ... but they can be nice for infinite adjustments.

Yeah, as Simon described it, you have two aperture rings. One sets the minimum aperture (like, say, f/8) and the other ring moves freely between whatever you've set with the first one and wide open.

Manual focus is actually pretty easy below f/8, and thanks to the preset aperture you can focus wide open and then easily stop down to shoot, which is a bonus.

Stop neglecting that one

That thing makes you better... haha

The Standpipe and the Reflected crop are really right my alley. That crop is just beautifully abstract...

Wow I am impressed with that little baby... How about posting a photo of the lens when you move on to your other neglected little babies. I do not know this lens.

I shot the Jupiter 85 a bit last week and it had not been on the camera in a while... look forward to your turn with it this week.

Hope you are just as thrilled to get a compliment from Steve as well. Those are some truly striking photos. I am looking forward to the J-9 stuff.
