A close encounter with a dragonfly....
Posted By: Heinrich Lohmann, 08-28-2009, 10:14 PM

......On one of my many roadside stops last June I saw this little feller literally hanging from a small twig a couple of feet above the water at a rivers edge. It was soaking wet and covered in pine pollen. One wing was badly damaged so it must have had an "encounter". It hang there for almost an hour and than it was gone.

All with K20D and Pentax DFA 2.8 100mm macro.

Wow, you did get close Heinrich.
I'm glad I have a laptop, I prefer the last one the other way up. Looks like he was either smiling or grimacing.

Hi Gary and thank you.

Do you or anyone else know why vertical images when posted "imgwide" show original as normal and compress when "enlarged"?

Take care,

Or he's just plain mad - so much detail here.
It's almost frightening...

Beautiful images of an ugly cuss (although not - presumably - to other dragonflies); the last one is outstanding.

Very close. It looks like it has taken a trip to the beach.

Good work Heinrich.

Thank you Carl for the kind words.

The cliff swallows were flying up and down the river feeding on dragonflies and whatever else was around. This one got away but must have fallen into the water. The rivers edges were yellow with pine pollen and when this dragonfly crawled up unto this stick a lot of pollen stuck to it. It hung there for almost an hour and than was gone. Whether it flew away or fell back into the water I do not know.

Take care,

Thank you for the kind words. Such is nature and sometimes it's cruel but no more so than us humans.

Take care,

You'd have to ask Adam that question Heinrich. Post in Site Suggestions, I'm sure you won't be the only one to want an answer to that question.

Here is the answer:

Because the imgwide tag forces the image width to 640 pixels, and then shows the maximum size (up to the original) that will fit your screen. I may create a dedicated tag for verticals later on, as the current tags are only designed for horizontal images.
