This is a shot of one of my slipper orchids currently in bloom. I think the background is quite distracting. Thanks for looking and comments welcome so I can improve my photography!

I would agree that the back ground is a little distracting leaving little time to look at the true beauty, the orchid itself. Did you use a fill flash? Keep them coming. JIM

No flash. Camera is Pentax K-7 and 18-55mm WR lens.

Same flowers with a different background with natural light. Which one looks better? Thanks for any input!

Hi,

I like the second one much more. I'm by no means an expert, but my thoughts as to why the second is better:
- no distracting background, as you say
- I think the composition/ the angle of the 3 flowers is great. nothing wrong with #1, but #2 is just better IMO
- The flowers and plant in #2 appear more vibrant and colourful.

try a wider aperture, like f3.5. the distracting background just might turn into some interesting bokeh to highlight the flowers
