Documentary B&W
Posted By: Sailor, 08-29-2009, 01:57 PM

Last week sailing on the bay we experienced a hot, almost windless day that sported a brassy, featureless sky. Primarily because I had little else to do on a lazy sailboat moving at 3 kts on that listless afternoon, I shot some pictures of commercial fishing boats. I decided to convert them to B&W to see if I could get the look of "documentary" B&W images recording working people, particularly those shot in the '30's, '40's and '50's. How close did I get?

Jer, I like these, and they certainly do look like a documentary-style or newsprint-look series.
The subdued contrast seems fitting and the composition seems just right.

Nicely done and thanks for sharing them.

I agree - nice and appropriate conversions. Now where's the grain?

I really like the first one too. Nice photos Jer. I miss the shrimp boats around here. They were fazing out when I was here visiting in 1998 and I managed to capture one while it was docked.

Btw, I also used to work on one of these, a nice small 40 footer.

Thanks much, PL. Yours must have been an interesting experience. I know little about operations on one of these boats - we generally try to steer clear of them. When their nets are out, they have right-of-way over sailboats. Anyway, I always figure they're trying to make a living, and don't need hassles from deletantes on pleasure craft.
