Salute to Hitchcock - B&W or Color?
Posted By: Sailor, 09-02-2009, 08:00 PM

Here are a couple of shots from this afternoon. I rather like the B&W versions, but before I throw away the color ones . . . . . what do y'all think?

B&W. But try a sepia tint.

Why would you toss the color ones?

Color all the way. One can almost hear the sounds and smell sea air. Very nice.

Nice. I'd try B&W with a touch more exposure/contrast perhaps. I also suggest cropping the first one - take a quarter or third off of the top so that the movement becomes more horizontal and the focus moves to the birds flocking to the boat.

I am a huge fan of B&W but the color wins here.

I guess I will be odd man out. In my opinion, the red umbrella is very powerful and draws too much attention to itself in a way that does not to contribute to the overall story of the picture. So in this case, I prefer the BW version because I get greater sense of the overall fishing scene without being distracted by the red umbrella, which appears touristy. This is less applicable in the second image where both the blue elements and size of the boat, and the people, nicely balance each other and what is important is immediately seen.

Hey thanks for the comments. Cropping - as you suggest - makes sense to me; I'll give it a try.

Amazing seasideness, Jer. Wish I had gotten to see more of this when I was last in Corpus. Just the slightest tinge of sepia-tone would definitely help on the first one. Second is better in colour. How'd you get these?

very nice - I like the first one, and just like someone above said, I like B&W but the color one feels better imho.
