Napa, CA Jazz Guitar Concert
Posted By: mikeSF, 09-04-2009, 02:32 PM

While in Napa, I took in a very special jazz guitar concert at one of the wineries. I shot these from the front row. No flash, just my Cosina 55 f/1.2 at about f/2 or so.

i used f/2 on the Cosina 55mm, ISO 800, shutters varied between 1/60th and 1/125th. I am surprised at how well ISO 800 looks on the K10D; I usually stay at ISO 400 or less but it was rather dark without flash and there was no way ISO 400 was gonna cut it..

Most of my lenses are manual focus which i discovered is just fine for concerts where everyone is sitting still on stage - just focus one time and forget about it, haha. On the other hand, I try to never use manual lenses when trying to photograph my kids - it just isnt worth it. I do tell my 7 year old, "if you must move, please try to remain in the same plane of focus", but you know kids never listen...

These are terrific - refreshing shots of cats that can actually play guitar (rather than simply holding one while jumping up and down in baggy jeans and tattoos).

Great job.

thanks...yes, as far as jazz guitar goes, these guys represent the very best players around today. And the instruments they are playing are absolutely gorgeous.

Great shots, I'm sure the wine will also be improved by a little jazz too.
