Vancouver Skyline - In Praise of old M lenses
Posted By: gscara, 09-08-2009, 05:00 PM

These Vancouver skyline shots were taken with the Pentax-M 28mm f2.0 lens mounted on a k10d. This lens offers exceptional sharpness and clarity for this type of landscape photography. These are HDR shots.

Vancouver Skyline

Vancouver Skyline Panorama

The panorama has three separate images stitched together to form the composite and is well worth viewing large sized. The original tiff file is well over 500 megs in size.

Overdone HDR, for me. Makes them look like "struggling artist" paintings.

The pictures look like they're probably really good, though. I'd like to see the originals.

Pretty cool. Live just a few miles from there and miss the place. Need to go. Was looking getting more m lenses. That one is now on the list.

One of the original exposures

This shot was the middle shot of the sequence of 5. The shot has the following post processing adjustments:
The shot was first leveled and a curve adjustment was made. The lightness channel was then sharpened. The shot was then exported as a jpg for the forum. The HDR that I posted had three additional steps: tone mapping, detail enhancing and color balancing.

Side note:
I always understood the word photography means "paint with light". It is amusing when people use photography to deal with idealogical issues rather than as an information channel to entertain our senses!

I think that the pano shot is awesome. I like the PP done in that shot (not sure if it's quite as HDRed as the main shot...). Nice work, I love the detail.

Looking good.
(Colour boosted a bit too much for my liking though).

Thanks for the info on the 28/2 lens

I like the first very much, but not as an HDR. It seems to me the original gives you the opportunity to pull out something wonderful.

In the spirit of fairness, though, I find a lot of HDRs unsatisfying. They show everything, but seem to turn 2-dimensional. So please don't take offense - it's your photo, if you like it that way more power to you.

I have never done a HDR shot, and while not a huge fan of HDR, I do have to say that I like the first one. This probably sounds contradictory, but I think it would look cool hanging in my home office.

Thanks for all your input

I appreciate the comments and feedback. We went all the way from 'starving artist' to 'look cool hanging my home office'. That was quite a ride!

In a small way I am glad that I managed to raise the ire of some viewers. I had no idea that people felt as passionate as they do about HDR. Amazing to think that Pentax now includes a built in HDR feature in their most advanced K7. They must be pandering to all those starving artists. What will they do next?

It looks like my off-the-cuff remark came across worse than I intended. I'm sorry about that.

I do like the photos, I guess I'm just not an HDR guy. Apologies.
