Some domesticated birds

Taken at my sister's house this weekend.

Proud father watching his coop:

Giving me the evil eye:

And telling me to back off as I was too close to his babies:

These are taken on film then scanned? What kind of film? Do you scan prints or negatives? How much manipulation do you do to the digitized image? These are really nice. That dappled light in the background of the first one is hard to shoot without blowing out something. It's a mighty fine looking bird as well.

I did much better with bw film than with color, especially when I was doing my own darkroom work and had control over the final product.

Yes, film then scanned. Fuji Superia 400. Not much manipulation, a bit sharpening on the second one, he wasn't as sharp as the other two, and I don't under stand that at all, could be I was standing closer to this one. The other two were fine. I did crop them. On the first one there was a bit of coop post so I cropped that out, and on the second one, I cropped that to get just his upper neck and head portions. Other than said that's all I did.

I usually don't have a problem when getting bokeh.

I might try converting the first one to b&w and see how it looks. I used to shoot a lot of b&w, then I moved to color when I sold my enlarger, and darkroom equipment.

I'm thinking the first one will make a good 8x10 for my brother-in-law as these are his birds.

Thanks for the comments Mel.

So you scan the negatives? What do you have to scan them? I have some negs I want to scan but am lacking adequate technology to do so.

metroeloise, thanks for the compliments.

Mel, I use an Epson 4490 Photo scanner. It's a flatbed but it does do a decent job for being what it is. It comes with a holder that holds the negatives off the bed so I don't get bad scans like some that use the adapter to scan negatives. I can scan up to 4x5 film.

I think you've done well too, these scans have come up reasonably well on screen.
Well done with these.

Thank you Ash!

Usually mine look ok in PSE, then when I compress them to jpg, that's when all goes wrong. But these...I was surprised they were this good once loaded here from flickr.

That character certainly looks indignant in the last image. Nice job.

Thanks Jer. Yes, he was very indigant.

I tried to get photos of mother hen and babies but they were moving too fast for me to capture the babies. Plus the fact she kept tucking them under her wings.
