Giant Bullfrog--First Raw Conversion
Posted By: fletcherkane, 05-21-2007, 05:04 PM

Ok, I started a thread earlier this week asking what the big deal with RAW was. I shot the weekend in RAW format, and the following shot is the first one I converted to jpeg. My son caught this frog with his friend in a swamp near our campground. It was literally the biggest frog I had ever seen. Nose to tail, a full 11 inches! This was the best photo I got of him before the boys put him back in the lake. C & C welcome...

It looks good to me fletcherkane.

Isn't working in Raw Great
I've pretty much only shot JPG's the last 2 months or so, but switch back to raw whenever I might want to play around with a certain pic.

If you can try shooting a sunrise or sunset and see what you can do. You'd probably be impressed how you can make the same picture look completely different.

try black and white from RAW

If you are into it, try it, you will get a much better result than is possible with jpeg's. I think its the only way to get a good black and white result from digital.

First, the shot is a very good shot. Second, Now you know why people shoot RAW.. I don't know if you have any Photo shop programs or paint, shop programs? If you do then you will find the joy of RAW. I don't think you will be sorry for Switching to a RAW shoot.

Very nice frog! No doubt about it, shooting RAW gives you more detail to work with in Photoshop.

On St. Lucia they told us of legandary frogs as big as dinner plates; they called them 'mountain chickens'. I don't think the reference to the dinner plate was accidental.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I don't have Photoshop yet, but I am using Corel PaintShop Pro Photo XI. It seems to do a very good job for a beginner like me, and it supports the same plugin format as Photoshop. I am currently trying out the Photomatix HDR Plugin. Don't know if I'll purchase it yet....

Congratulations on your first RAW, and that's a great photo! You should title it "The Great Green Frog!" Nice colors and good composition.

Nice capture of the "Great Horny Toad" to steal a line from Yosemite Sam ..11 inches man like Salty said a few more of those and your next shot could be 'tastes like chicken"

Welcome to the world of RAW, very nice first image. Once you are hooked on RAW you won't shoot anything else unless absolutely neccesary. BTW, there is nothing wrong with Corel Paint Shop Pro. I took the liberty to play with you image a bit, it is here: IMGP2653-1.jpg photo - Heinrich Lohmann photos at pbase.com I hope that you do not mind. I'll take it down in a few days.

Take care, Heinrich

Thanks Heinrich,
What technique did you use to give the illusion of stretching the infocus area farther back down the frogs head? I love how you brought out the brown spots on his back as well. I am flattered that you would take the time to tweak it.
Thanks.

Fletcherkane.

Took all of two minutes, adjust levels, adjust color, some burn on the left side and unsharp mask. (Unsharp mask was at 75% at .6 radius) If you do this with the raw image it does of course work a lot better.

Take care, Heinrich
