Blackbird Fly
Posted By: Nowhere Matt, 09-11-2009, 12:05 PM

I am sure that I have not seen an SR-71 Blackbird before this month but I went along with my wife on her business trip to Virginia and I was able to see two of these legendary aircrafts: One in the Smithsonian's Air And Space Musuem - Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center and another at The Virginia Aviation Museum.
Have a look if you are interested.

It was awesome to see these things fly... Nice images.

As an aviation enthusiast I have a hard time coming to terms with the fact that the fastest airplane ever built can only be seen in a museum.

Are the first three from the Air and Space Museum?

I don't remember it looking like that; of course, it's been a few years.

Maybe they were dusting and forgot where everything went.

Yes the first three are the SR-71A on display in the museum very close to Dulles airport. On it's last flight in 1990, Air Force pilots flew it from L.A. to D.C. to mark a new speed record of 1 hour 4 minutes at about 3,418 km per hour. The aircraft was then donated to the Smithsonian.
This center was not opened until 2003.

How beautiful can one fuselage, 2 wings, 2 fins and two engines be?

Very nice photos of an amazing plane. Years ago I went to the Smithsonian Air and Space museum with my dad who spent his entire career as an engineer for military aircraft manufacturers...it was quite an education.

I don't know why, but everytime I see one of those it brings back cold war memories of the 1982 film, Firefox, with Clint Eastwood.
