Comments & corrections please.

I never realized what a challenge they could be. Such dynamic range of color.

Great images.

I'm amazed you could get them only at 1/500 sec

Many thanks for the kind comments.

Regarding the "head shot" this is a humpback feeding.

First they go under a school of bait fish and exhale. The bubble cloud drives the fish to the surface. Then they rise to the surface with mouth open. The rise time is not so fast that more than 1/500 of a second is required, however, a faster shot would have provided better water clarity. In fact this is the 2nd of three images, i.e., 1) 16:14:25, 2) 16:14:25, and 3) 16:14:26 collected.

By the time the RAW buffer cleared on the K200D the whale was gone. Such a shot is pretty easy to anticipate because the bubble cloud was visible before the whale emerged. What makes the shot neat was the whale surfacing only 15 feet from the boat.

"We're gonna need a bigger boat."
I have no idea how often you get the opportunity to see whales in nature that closely but I would just be thrilled to see it once.
