Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds
Posted By: Bud, 05-24-2007, 05:15 AM

The hummingbirds have finally returned to our yard, but photo opps have been few and far between as they're very skittish right now. Here'a few shots that I got (through double-paned glass) yesterday.
Pentax K10D set to TAv with F*300 f/4.5 and natural light. I was very pleased (and surprised) at the quality through the window with ISO800.

Thanks for looking!

Nice capture considering the conditions. One of the few shots I have seen of a humming bird with the wing motion stopped - nicely done what was the shutter speed ?

I just downloaded the image and checked the EXIF-info, EXIF-info says 1/1000 and 1/1500 on those images. Very nicely captured, ESPECIALLY being shot through a window!

Daacon and Libbe,

Thanks for the comments. I added the exif to the pics. I'm finding the TAv mode to be great for hummingbirds and I'm very impressed with the quality of shots and crops I can get out of ISO 800 and the K10D.

Hi Bud,

I second daacon's comments- those are some really great captures! Are they cropped or straight out of the camera?

From what I'm seeing above, it looks like I'll have to buy a hummingbird feeder, set up the 300/2.8, and stay put with a lot of patience I hope that in doing that I'll discover yet another application of my big gun (which, unfortunately, hasn't seen much use so far)...
