Some Shots From A Show Lastnight
Posted By: Christopher M.W.T, 09-27-2009, 07:58 AM

I really should have been partying on the streets of Geelong with all my friends but I had commitments to the girlfriend...if I didn't go I would've been murdered so I made the best of it

All shot with the DA40 @ 1000-1600iso. Really poor lighting conditions and I must admit I wasn't too happy with the DA40 in these conditions, a few times I really struggled to get in focus shots.

I have decided to purchase a Sigma 50mm F1.4 for low light shooting.

Also flash wise when I did use it, I used the AF540 and tried to bounce whenever possible.

This is the first time I ever shot photos at a concert.

Lots of nice shots, especially the first group shot, but it's clear most of them could have benefitted from a faster lens. Sharpness is off on a bunch. I have a Pentax F 50 f1.4 and I'm impressed at how well it's autofocus tracks in extremely low light. It does take a little longer hunting, but it ends up finding the target better than a slower lens.

Yer the missing focus in some shots really pissed me off, I was thinking/hoping the da40 would've performed a lot better in these conditons but it just struggled, oh well.

You had your expectations too high on the ol' pancake.
First group shot is very good, many of the others as mentioned are off in one way or another.
Sure, the fast fifty would help with an extra 2 stops of light, but be weary of too thin a DoF at f/1.4 - even at f/2.0 it'll be hard to get focus right on a moving subject...

Well i've got an old Ricoh manual f1.7 50mm to test out but I def think the Sigma 50mm 1.4 is my next purchase after I pick up my 50-135 DA*.

I relied on AF as I couldn't comfortably use the pancake to MF.

Any suggestions of how I could in PP bring down the obvious noise without using external NR plugins?

Here is a shot done by another photographer from the same night, taken on a Canon 40D at f2.8 1600iso on a L Series 50-200mm.

The shot is really, really clean. Is the K7 capable of this sort of cleanliness?
