Wild Skies!
Posted By: heliphoto, 09-29-2009, 09:46 PM

Went out drivin' today, looking for something to shoot. Happily, the weather cooperated with very unseasonal and un-Californian skies... Mammatus clouds!...

All shot with the 12-24mm f/4 @ 12mm, f/5.6, ISO 100 on the K20D.

This shot's a pano, from seven portrait orientation frames (a lot of overlap)...

Here's a single 12mm landscape shot from the same area - my favorite of the series...

A backlit tree - the mama clouds are behind me in this shot...

What a surreal, almost harrowing, cloud formation...
Excellently captured. I like the colour version best!
Well done.

Very moody, good mammatus clouds! My only CC here would be it looks like the horizontal is off in two of them, maybe worth a tweaked rotation and crop just to straighten them up?

All three are nice but the B&W ones look more forboding. The 3rd is positively brilliant!

Nice shots of the clouds. I'm always fascinated by the weather and cloud formations that I see. Reminds me of the nice little storm that rolled through Harrisburg while we were on vacation this year. Snapped this from the hotel where we were staying:

Glad you like 'em Big G - Thanks for the straightening feedback - I really do appreciate it as sometimes I miss that little detail ... I've looked again at these shots though, and they look level to me - it's tough since I wasn't shooting square to anything at all, and there are few items in the shot which actually represent "level" - in this case, primarily the water's surface (not the waters edge which is convoluted and misleading) - after your comment, I've gone back and forth about .5° CCW on the second shot, but for now, I'm leaving it as is. It could be that I'm calibrated wrong (inner ear problem? ), but that's just how I see it.

Thanks Mike - especially for the feedback on #3, which I felt was the least interesting of the bunch... I did a lot of work on #3 in post to get it just so...

Cool shot there - I started out just shooting the clouds, but I wanted to give them more context. Thanks.
