So I had to Work a Few Weekends Ago...
Posted By: Donkeypunch, 10-09-2009, 08:50 PM

There is going to be a lot of shots in this thread, so if it is too many Mods, let me know, and I will tone it down, but I figured the gearheads would enjoy these.

Never got around to posting these, and figured I would.

Like the title says, I had to work again on Saturday. Work involved going up to Lime Rock Park, as a chaperone for the US Naval Submarine School Silver Dolphins Honor Guard, so they could present the national colors for the Pre Race National Anthem (for the 27th Annual Lime Rock Antique Festival). I am the Public Affairs Officer for them now, so if there are any events during my duty week, outside 50 miles from base, we have to go with them. What they do takes about a half hour all told, so the rest of the day was spent looking at vintage race cars, and getting rides in a few after the racing was over.

This was the showcase car for the day. Mercedes Benz W154 Silver Arrow. The car is virtually priceless. I'll let you guys read about it. Anyway it is about the loudest car I have ever heard. Pic's 1-10 are of it. Yeah I shot a lot of shots of it, but wouldn't you?
Also, here is video of the thing. When they first start it, I get all weak in the knees.

46. Here was the dude with the two Ferrari 250 GT's. One the race car, one the "daily driver" :

48. More W154

Here are the other two cars I rode in:
Not my photo either:
The open wheel car was terrifying, and has a pretty storied past, if you read the article. The Cunningham wasn't really a Cunningham, but a kit based on one. But man was it fast.

Tough job you have there. Nice shots all of them. The last I think I would like better as landscape though.

Best picture post ever!

Very cool track day for sure. Nice mix of cars here too. The old Ferarri's are the best looking ones ever built, IMO. Great pics, thanks for showing these.

Yeah, let me tell you it was a really rough day. Work for about a half hour, and drink a few free beers, walk around the paddock and look at these things, and then get a ride in a 30's open wheel hill climb car, a Porsche Cup car, and a Cunningham clone. The hill climb car was probably the most fun. Also terrifying. I own a 360 HP/TQ WRX, and I thought it was fast, and it is amazing that a 30's open wheeler on thin little bias belted tires can be that quick. Power to weight is a great thing. And as far as carrying the bags, I end up carrying most of these guys stuff. When they're all dressed and ready, you don't want anything taking away from the military bearing. Thanks for the comments all.
