Late afternoon sun is a pita

Late afternoon sun is a pita · 01:31 PM

I rather dislike late afternoon sun for photo taking. Relatively strong from the side, can have a big yellow component. Makes for big time lens flare, my shadow all over everything, difficult exposure and metering problems.
Except when it gives results like this:

nicely captured ... one of my own favorite shots is a backlit orchid in the late afternoon sun.
