off camera lighting
Posted By: Taff, 10-12-2009, 06:41 AM

I am now attempting to teach myself OFF-CAMERA lighting, in manual mode (flash and camera)
this is my first attempt. converted to black and white as I am trying to add shadow and form to objects. Honest C&C welcome, especially from you flash experts
p.s sorry about the close up, untill my new lens arrive i have to use my 70-200 as fullymanual lenses will not work with wireless flash.

No expert here.
But I can comment...
Your result is good - has certianly brought out the texture in her skin, creating a more 3D effect.
I would have chosen flash at camera right so that she's facing more towards the light source and not cropped so tightly.
It's exciting to experiment with given all the variables that make lighting so dynamic.

I am in no way an expert, but it looks to me that some of the highlights in her face are blown. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, and infact I like it in this particular picture, as it adds to the softness of her skin. Also, I really like the way the light adds that twinkle to the eyes. The lips are also beautifully rendered.
