2 yr old Gavin won't look!
Posted By: Sarahbell, 10-15-2009, 09:24 AM

What do you think of these pics? He's not looking at the camera in any of them. I do like a lot of more candid stuff myself, but do you think the mom and dad will be happy with these? I do have some where he is looking, but not too many...

Also, any critique on them??

Thanks!

He's a photogenic enough looking kid, that's for sure!

In photos 3&4, there's just not enough face IMO. In #5, the flash looks harsh and it appears that the boy's white shirt is blown out.

#1 is really cure, and IMO his expression accentuates those blueberry eyes, but the focus appears kinda soft, although maybe that's just a result from the jpeg compression?

Thanks flipp, I agree w/ 3&4 not having enough face, but I was just trying to catch the moment. I don't personally like #4 much, but the mom specifically pointed that out when he was looking throught the railing and said she wanted one like that. The white is definitely blown out in the last one. I'll work on that tonight and repost to see what you think. The first may seem soft bc of the color pop action I added to it. I'll look into that as well...

Thanks again!!

Not bad, its a pity he didnt look at the cam, he has lovely eyes. One point that i can see is your b&w conversions arent consistent. when I do a set of pics i like to keep the tones etc the same, so it looks like they were all shot with the same type film (emulating B&W)

He definitely suits a portrait of his eyes looking right into the lens - those would make more compelling portraits.

These are fine and the fill flash in the first is reasonably well done - the B&W conversion would be improved a little to bring out more brightness in his face and less in the background.

But well done with them.

Thank Taff and Ash. Taff, for the B/W conversions I have two diff actions I use. One is Splendor B/W and the other a chocolate B/W. The cohocolate one tends to be brighter and I generally use it if the other is too dark. When the splendor is too dark and I try to lighten it, it tends to really blow out the light colors. So, some look better with one and some with the other....
Ash, I can definitely try to darken up the background in the one w/ the father. That's a good idea. Iwill try that later. Thanks to you both again!

thanks for your opionion Netuser. I guess I just do a lot of random shooting and the mom specifically asked for the one where he chased the ball and when he looked through the railing. She told me "get that" as we were shooting. Lol!

If she/client like it, they command.

I should have told why the others didn't touch me. On #3 and #4 the kid was going away, no face. I always like face, or at least some good profile.

Last one #5 just needed to be fixed to work.
