God's Thumbprint - Burkes Garden
Posted By: Javaslinger, 10-19-2009, 09:25 AM

I took a trip out to Burkes Garden in Bland County, VA. This place is also known as God's Thumbprint.... It certainly felt like God was around this day!

The only editing was some white balance, tone adjustments, and applications of gradients to bring out the sky or the ground.... I'm a rookie...

Comments and Criticism are welcome as always....

Love the dramatic lighting. Looks like I have to add another Virginia local to my "to shoot" list.

Another fan here.
Well done with these gorgeous landscapes.
First four and #8 are excellent.
Perfect timing with the sunrays bursting through on the beautiful scenery.

They are very nice pictures. It would be nice to know what gear you used.

Wow guys! I'm gushing!

Thanks very, very, very much for the wonderful compliments. I was definitely blessed by a day where you pretty much couldn't screw it up. Well, I did trash about 100 photos and kept about 200... But that's pretty much the flipside of the usual results!

By the way with regards to the light rays... There was no waiting... it was amazing.. I'd miss one ray just in time to see another appear... they were everywhere in great variety and coming and going all afternoon. It was truly a day to be grateful for as a photographer.

How do I take 300 shots? I don't use tripods... which may accounts for 1/2 my throwaways... I'm too lazy... I will learn, I know....

Anyway, Gear... K20D with the kit lens... I'm very happy with it. I do plan to get a 16-250 eventually... I hate changing lenses... I have a 100-300 and never use it. Man, I am a lazy photographer...

Anyway, I have a lot more I haven't gone through and processed. Most of these I had to darken the sky or brighten the landscape as I was shooting into the sun usually. I use lightroom and the wonders of the gradient tool. A little autotone and, can you believe, manual adjustment of white balance...

I'll post the best of the rest eventually... I'm a hound for C&C...

Thanks again everyone! Please feel free to criticize as well. I have MUCH to learn.

Thanks!!

Ken

You have some excellent work in this series. I particularly like 4 and 11, but they are all fairly good.
