Yacht race Coastal Classic
Posted By: mingdie, 10-24-2009, 02:26 AM

I had my work cut out when I shot the start of the most popular yacht race in New Zealand. The race starts in Auckland and finishes in Russell (119 nm) and this year the record was broken by the super maxi Alfa Romeo with the average speed of 17.8 knots in 6 hours and 43min.

The water was very ruff and I got tossed around a fair bit in our inflatable RIB but the K20D was up to it and I managed a few photos I was happy with.

Wow - looks like you guys had some air for this race. Man, Alfa Romeo is smoking!

I really like this series, Eddie - it's very well done; I appreciate how hard it is to get good shots from a pitching inflatable.

Among these great images, the third one is spectacular. I can just feel the rush.

Really good sailing shots. I'm with Sailor. #3 is smokin' Just look at the spray from the port rudder to get an idea of the speed. Looks like it's not only Wellington that has strong winds.

Richard.

Yeah 3 is a great shot. In the series above I like the first one even more. A classic shot but still worked great here.

From the slideshow IMGE9810, IMGE9871 and IMGE9813 are just a few other favourites of a very good series. Great work from an inflatable!

Thank you for your nice comments.

Ash. I like to get close and take photos of the crew. It can be interesting to see them work.

Sailor. The wind was just right for the race. We followed Alfa Romeo when she powered up and she got up to 23 knots. The cat in the third shot is less then half her size but did the same speed.

dcmsox2004. The salt spray was my biggest problem. I had to clean the lens quite a few times.

RichardS. It is not only Wellington that gets good wind but we don't have it every day. We will see how Alfa Romeo does in Sydney to Hobart later on.

Peter. I was lucky with IMGE9871 as the sun came through at the right moment.

Cheers
Eddie
