Splendid Fairywren
Posted By: goddo31, 10-25-2009, 06:13 AM

During my visit to the Araluen Botanic Park today, I was lucky enough to spot some Splendid Fairywrens (Malurus splendens).

These guys are tiny, and very fast.
The plumage of the male is amazing, but unfortunately this was the best I could get:

However the female was much more sociable

Please don't mind the distracting OOF flowers :ugh:

C&C welcomed.

Thanks for looking

Good work! It looks to be a bird worthy of an obsessive photographic quest. Keep after 'em

Looks like these little guys are as much of a challenge to shoot as their Superb fairy wren cousins in the east.

Thanks Dave.
I can see myself going back to this place and trying for a 'keeper' of the blue male bird for sure...
It's over an hour away from where I live however.

EDIT: Mike - yeah, I'd say so. I was quite lucky that these guys weren't very afraid of us humans. I could get quite close to the female. The shots of her are uncropped with the 55-300 at 300mm.

cheers

So that's what that little fella is?
I've spotted it around at times and wondered what sort of bird it was - very playful and excitable.
The male shot unfortunately didn't work but #3 is good to go.

Wow, uncropped! I find the female superb fairy wrens are also a lot more obliging than the males. Looks like you've got your next photographic challenge decided, can't wait to see the shot if you manage to nail a male.

I think you have just convinced me to make it my next challenge
It's added to the list anyway...

It's interesting to think that the shyness of the male was not just related to that individual.
If/when I get the male, I will post it here for sure

thanks for the comments
