He saw me...but too late- got my GBH BIF.
Posted By: imtheguy, 10-27-2009, 09:02 PM

There is cranky old GBH near me that is gone before you can get within 200m if he sees you. With a wingspan that looks to be at least 2m I wanted a side shot so I set up shop near his favorite fishing hole and set a manual focus just at the spot where he would fill the frame. Sometimes a plan comes together, rarely but sometimes. He came around shortly, I jumped up to make him flare at my focus spot and got just one decent shot.

DA*300mm, f4, 1/750s, iso800 cropped horizontally only as he filled it vertically.

EDIT: changed shot from Flickr to my ISP and the color is now almost true

Good detail in this capture.
The bright bakground's a little disturbing but the bird's beautifully rendered.

I must say... you're the guy! Nice work! I'm really bad at the whole patience thing - gotta work on that... You even planned when to jump up and startle him??? impressive!

Planning is no different than duck hunting that I did for 30 years before putting down the guns and hunting with a camera instead. Except I didnt need decoys or any bait!

Thanks for commenting Ash. Yes, sun on the trees across the river was bright so although I do not typically PP the environment, I darkened the highlights and reposted the pic just for grins. Also wanted to see if the color in the wings came out better the 2nd time since the first post really hosed the blue from its normal "dusty" look to an unnatural rich look.

Well done! It's great when a cunning plan actually works, isn't it?

I have to say that's the bluest GBH I've ever seen!

Nice! Herons do spook easily, though different birds seem to have different personalities.
