Yosemite Valley Autumn
Posted By: heliphoto, 11-15-2009, 11:03 PM

Finally! Yosemite Valley, and I didn't miss all the color (though it's almost gone). I even got lucky and had clouds .

3.

4.

5.

6.

Shots #4, 5, and 6 are "Enfused" mergers of two frames for HDR (though I like a very mild form of HDR so you still see black shadows and blown highlights around the sun - the dynamic range shooting into the sun in Yosemite valley is very large!) All were taken with the "new" camera (Canon 5D2 and either the 17-40mm L (for most) or the 24-105mm L (#2 & #4)).

C & C are always appreciated, especially if you see something which looks artificial or over-processed. A lot of work went into trying to make these shots look like no work went into them, so if something catches your eye, shout out!

Josh, these are without exception outstanding images and I do not see any evidence of over processing. This is HDR the way I like it, thanks for posting them.

Thanks Heinrich - I mislead you a bit, actually only 4, 5, and 6 are HDR - the other three were single shots. Glad you like them .

Spectacular stuff, Josh. Nothing about these wonderful shots suggests HDR to me; rather they looks like the work of a extraordinarilly talented photographer.

You're right Jer - I mugged some guy and took his shots (he had a fancy tripod, so I knew he was good ).

Thanks for the comment - the "HDR" is really just a stop or two... If I properly expose the foregrounds, the skies end up pure white when shooting against the sun like this, so I bracket enough to get some detail in the sky. I wish I'd shot another stop more exposure for #4 to get better detail in those clouds - oh well.

We knew all along it really wasn't your Canon. It's been said many times "A great photo comes from the photographer and not the camera he uses. JIM

Great captures, all of them! Number 4 & 5 are my favourites. And I have to agree: very good processing, just right!

Perfect photos, really makes me want to go there. I love number 4 particularly! The sun though the clouds.

Yeah - I'll agree with you there Jim. For landscapes, the camera of choice doesn't matter that much - assuming good quality. Knowing how to get the most out of a specific model is important - I'm still on a bit of a learning curve in that regard with the new camera right now.
