Posted By: izzyinstl, 06-06-2007, 04:33 PM

This photo was recently taken by fiance. How can the image be adjusted to correct shadows in eyes (raccoon eyes). Told the flash was on. I am to new to evaluate this. Can this be fixed in ps2 and how can be remidied before? Shot in jpg mode. Can someone help? Thank you in advance

if the flash was indeed on, it may be you have to turn up the flash exposure compensation to have more power coming out to help fill in those shadows.

I'm not sure if there's a "fill flash" option in your image editing application - (in the future) if it had been shot in RAW you can usually recover that easier. (I use Elements 5.0 with ACR 4.0 - it has a 'fill light" option.

for now - you could always just select the area around the eyes with a lasso tool and selectively lighten the shadow areas. It's not going to be perfect, but it should be satisfactory.

(Almost) never, never, never use flash direct at models face. Always bounce it to any degree. Use a proper commercial flash bounce device, a white card, paper, magazine, napkin, article of clothing, etc.....

And look carefully at your background through the camera viewfinder. For example, if you had moved a few feet / meter to the left and eliminated the door, just getting the wall and cross, the picture would probably be more memorable: focus interest on your subject.

because shadows are over-all, tis would be a difficult image to balance....nice shot tho' all around.........if you have a copy of lightroom or access to it you may try using the filllight tool to soften them if you chose......another tool with some control is in ps2, adjustment layers>selective color........combined with hue/satyuration this may be able to lighten shadows to some degree, however, you will need to make selection and apply adjustmments, feather, and copy and paste....then play with opacity. that should allow some lightening while maintaining overall tonal control on the rest of the image
good luck........if you are interested in digi darkroom stuff try MacDermid Incorporated
good luck
