Downy Woodpecker M 400/5.6 (2 images)
Posted By: 8540tomg, 11-27-2009, 03:01 PM

Went hunting with the M 400/5.6 after work today and managed a few images of a Downy Woodpecker.

I've seen these fellows a lot of late but they seldom are as cooperative as they were this afternoon.

K10D SMC Pentax M 400/5.6, ISO 400 @ f 5.6 or 8.

Thanks Lowell,

Nothing special in post processing. I just changed the time of day when I shoot with this lens. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time for this optic, and most others, it seems. I had been shooting around noon most of the time in hopes of having a faster shutter speed. I got the speed but also a lot of CA/PF due to the high contrast situations which prevail at that time of day. It was quite cloudy today and I had to use ISO 400 instead of the ISO 100 I usually favour. Getting better results now.

Thanks Dave/Bruce,

Not quite enough depth of field but the best I could manage with the light I had.

These are both good images Tom, no matter what lens was involved.

Thanks Pentx Girl,

I've been trying to capture an image of these guys for quite a while.

There have been a number of excellent bird shots on the forum of late.
While not excellent here are a few more form the same Woodpecker series.
The Downy wouldn't give me his best side in these images.

In his Woodpecker way I think he was just flipping me off.

Great series Tom - very well done, considering the tough exposure situation to get a black/white bird correctly exposed!

BTW, he definitely was giving you the bird...

Marc

Nice shots of the woodpecker Tom, I am impressed by how close you got to what I assume is a small bird. I think I need to work on my stealth techniques
