1680mm focal length.
Posted By: SCGushue, 11-28-2009, 08:23 PM

Finally, after many years, took the time to get my dedicated 1.4 Pentax extender coupled to the A*1200mm lens and pointed it at the moon tonight.

This is only the third image I have ever bothered to take of the moon. Not the best phase... but it does show some fo the qualities of the lens/coupler combination.

The image is uncropped.

So, it takes roughly 1700mm to fill the sensor on the K7 with the moon.
In previewing this image the sharpness just doesn't show up on the post so I have also included the direct link.

100% crop: ISO 400 shot in JPEG. Extreme southern pole area.

That is a great shot of the moon, very detailed, looks like that lens and TC combo works out very nicely.

Top detail mate.
Not an easy capture to get sharp.
You've done well.

Stephen, that is the sharpest moon shot that I've seen in a long time. It's way better then I get with Bigma. 1680mm plus the crop factor makes it 2520mm, needs a pretty solid tripod. You done good and thanks for posting it.

Great image Steve,

Wait a moment - taken with an A* 1200 lens!!!!. Holy crap! You must be the only guy on the planet with that lens. I'd like to see a few more examples of anything you have shot with that puppy. Noblesse oblige my friend. When you have a monster like that you just have to share.

Thank you. Quite frankly, I was surprised to see nearly no chromatic abberattion at the black white junction.

Thank you Ash, and you are right. Sharpness at this focal length can be a real challenge at these super focal lengths. I'll explain the setup in the post below.

Appreciate the support. To paraphrase Roy Schieder in JAWS.... " I think you're gonna need a bigger lens".

Thanks Heinrich. I do have about as solid a base to shoot from as you can buy. Unfortunately, sometimes even that is tough because any mirror slap produces a small sine wave shake e even with 3 second remote delay.
I used a Gitzo 5430 6X carbon tripod (holds 58 pounds) and a Wimberley II gimbal. The weakest link in the setup is the vibrations off the deck I was shooting from.

Thank you.
I don't know how many are still in service, but there were just over a hundred made by Pentax.
A few other images taken with this lens can be found in PPG @ PENTAX Photo Gallery

Impressive results, very sharp, excellent detail. This just goes to show that if you shoot for the stars the moon may be obtainable.

Well done!
