She looks too depressed or tired in the first photo. I think you can capture her looking better than that. The hair in the face is distracting. Your photo came out better than hers, but it should be the other way around!

I will add a bit to what K-9 had said.To me she also looks wasted.Maybe a different mouth expression and by having the hair in her face,it's putting shadows on her eyes,which blackens them,giving her that wasted,bags under the eyes look.The second image,I like!Very natural looking.Keep up the good work!

#2 is a good low-key shot.
It works.
#1 suffers from the above mentioned posing and grooming problems, but also flatter, less contrasting lighting style.
Keep at it.
