Experiments in Blue
Posted By: Nixarma, 06-11-2007, 11:56 AM

I was at a nursery yesterday with my girlfriend and as she was lost amongst all those plants I spent some time photographing some colourful planters.

These photographs are unusual products for me because I don't often leave the colour in my photographs and, also, I don't normally shoot around noon. (I might remedy the latter... the light at noon provides for some hard, gritty emotion.)

Comments are always welcome and appreciated!

Nikhil

These are arresting Nikhil. As soon as I looked at #3, the words "grist for the mill" popped into my (admittedly tiny) mind.

Thank you, David and Jer!

In pic 1, is the portion of the planter in sunlight too bright? I can see sufficient blue and detail in that region on my screen but a couple of people felt that it was too bright. I'm curious as to your take on it.

Thanks!
Nikhil

Not to me - the contrast is part of the composition.

Blue is my favorite color!

Hi Nikhil!

I really like these. They could easily be printed large and hung as a triptych(sp?). Very cool compositions!

Hi Jer,

I struggled with 1 a bit. After much staring and evaluation, I found the photograph that I originally posted to have too much "white" in the bright portion... what is currently showing was my final attempt for yesterday and looks a little better than the original IMO. I am going to print a few versions out soon and make a final judgment based on the results

Thanks for your input!

Hi Tracy,

I'm looking forward to printing these out, if for nothing else other than to add some colour to my super-boring off-white apartment walls

I now wish I had shot some more compositions while I was there... I would definitely like to do a triptych. Looks like I'll have to convince my girlfriend that she really needs something else from that nursery (that's REALLY hard to do, heh!)

Thanks for your comments!

Nice shots! I really dig the perspective on number 2.

Thanks, Hamid!

I had 1 and 2 printed locally today and am quite happy with the results. Now I need to have them framed and hang them where they catch the light.
