Battle Under the Boards
Posted By: dadipentak, 12-05-2009, 04:27 PM

A snowy day gave me a chance to try and upgrade my PP, with emphasis on batch processing shots from my daughter's basketball games. I can't say I've got the workflow thing down but I'm making progress. Although it's not a batch product, I'm particularly pleased with this one.

K20D & F 50mm f/1.7 (f/3.2, 160s, ISO 2500)

Nice shot, I know the lighting in some of these gyms can be very tough. The shadows are great, as is the sharpness and detail for an action shot. You know where the ball is! This would be a nice shot to build a collage around.

The mixed lighting does pose some issues, but what makes this shot work well is the top lighting hitting these ladies right on their faces as they're looking up. A good one.

Thanks, guys! The lighting is ghastly in these gyms but sometimes creates some interesting effects. I can't tell you how much of an improvement this is from last year. I've made some progress with NR so I decided to shoot TAV and let the ISO go where it wants. I got away with 1/160s on this one but I found out the hard way that I really need 1/250 or 320--the kids get quicker every year

Nice shot Dave,

You are correct. The lighting in a school gym is about as bad as you will encounter anywhere in my experience.

Thanks, Tom! Of course, this is one of about 47 zillion attempts ;~)
